Ultimate Buying Guide
There’s no doubt about the fact that single serve coffee makers are easier and cheaper. But are they the ideal coffee brewing method? Say, when compared to a regular coffee maker such as drip coffee.
Having said that, with the growing community of coffee lovers out there. Even drip coffee makers are getting heavy competition with other types. Including stovetop percolators or French press coffee maker.
The point here is to pick what’s ideal for you. Does that mean buying a single serve coffee maker that uses K cups or coffee pods, or ground coffee? Well, if it satisfies all your coffee cravings then why not?
Drip coffee makers are simple, effective, and mostly automatic. High-quality drip machines allow you to adjust the brew strength, temperature, etc. But not all single serve coffee makers do. You can pick a different flavored K cup or pod. But you can’t manually alter the brew strength in all single serve machines.
This feature really affects the price of both drip and single serve coffee makers. A really expensive drip brewer will have more features than a cheap one. However, an expensive K cup will have no significant difference than a cheap one.
For example, the Keurig K55 which is almost 3x as expensive as the Keurig K15. But both K cup machines share the same performance and appeal.
Summarizing my point: quality is an important factor to consider.
How to Choose Single Serve Coffee Makers
Single serve coffee makers give you flexibility in performance. But not in the way a drip or espresso machine does. You can brew from a wide variety of pods or capsules or K cups. Flavors that are customized so you get a quick and delicious cup of coffee every time.
Now, you can select your favorite coffee roasts from light, medium, dark, or extra dark. Not only that, you can also try different flavors for every cup, such as caramel, vanilla, hazelnut, berry, etc. Lots of coffee brands such as Keurig also offer decaffeinated coffee cups or pods.
All you have to do is add the pod in the container, water, and press a button. But is there only one type of single serve coffee maker? The answer is not what you might think it is.
Though they’re single serve, you can pick different brew sizes for a single cup. This includes various cup sizes from 4 up to 12 ounces or more. Some machines come with an adjustable drip tray. So you can accommodate a taller glass for iced coffee. Or even a travel mug for those who like to drink coffee on the go.
Capacity also refers to the coffee maker’s water reservoir. The water reservoir for a single serve coffee maker is more generous than you think. It can give you an average for 3-6 cups before you have to refill it.
However, less expensive models offer 2-3 cups which means more refilling.
If you have limited counter space, a single serve brewer is ideal. They are more secure, stable, and lightweight enough to move around. With the smaller water reservoir capacity, you don’t have to worry about it taking up too much space.
The ideal height of a single serve brewer is 17 inches. It’s perfect for a home as well as an office setting. Taller models come with a larger water tank capacity with complicated water access.
For performance, the more features the better. Some single serve offer a milk frother, adjustable drip tray, and milk container.
How fast does your coffee maker brew? Does it have a programmable timer or automatic shut-off? All these features matter when you’re looking for a single serve coffee maker. After all, you want to make sure the coffee maker delivers delicious coffee on time every time.
Look for features that enhance your coffee-brewing experience. Hot water dispensing, iced coffee compatibility, and timer features are a few of them.
Types of Single Serve Coffee Makers
There are 4 types of single serve coffee makers.
- K-Cup coffee maker
A K-cup coffee maker is patented which uses Keurig coffee cups or capsules. It’s one of the most best-selling brewing systems on the market. A single K-cup contains ground coffee that is then brewed with hot water in the machine. You can dispose of these K cups after each use.
It’s the most accessible and mess-free way to make a cup of Joe. Having said that, K-cup coffee makers are limited in comparison. What I mean to say is that you cannot use coffee pods or ground coffee in a K-cup. It’s for Keurig coffee cups only.
However, if you embark upon a brand such as Starbucks. They share a Keurig license and are compatible with K-Cup coffee machines.
The thrill of using a K-cup coffee maker is that you can choose so many different flavors! But this is often also why you end up paying more per cup.
- Tassimo disc coffee maker
Tassimo disc coffee makers use coffee pods. However, Tassimo Discs have lost most of their charm. At least in terms of compatibility. Because you have always to buy Tassimo pods which are often very expensive. Even more expensive than K cup or single serve coffee capsules.
This being the primary reason why I have not included anyone Tassimo Disc coffee maker. When you have so many better options out there for your money.
- Nespresso coffee maker
Nespresso coffee makers are low-hassle and quick to brew. They’re more specific than K-cup coffee makers. Because you can still use the latter by various coffee brands. However, Nespresso capsules only work on Nespresso coffee makers. Nowhere else. Bummer, right?
But it’s not what you think. Nespresso coffee makers are quicker, more effective, and reliable. They give you variety as much as flexibility. Such as picking various brew sizes, adjusting brew strength, and design benefits.
Nespresso coffee makers are usually compact, lightweight, and portable. They don’t leak, make too much of noise, or rattle when in use. If you ask me, Nespresso machines make the best personal coffee makers. They also come the closest to brewing just like a high-quality espresso machine.
- Brew (pod-free) coffee maker
These may be labeled as traditional single serve coffee makers. Imagine a time when K-cup or Nespresso or coffee pods were non-existent. How would you brew a single cup in a coffee machine? That’s right; using ground coffee!
These machines work in the same manner. You have to buy your own coffee grinder, coffee beans, or buy pre-packaged ground coffee.
A brew coffee maker uses all the necessary features to make delicious coffee. And then some for extra enhancements and adjustability. Such as a milk frother, large water reservoir, water filter, etc.
What are BPA-Free Coffee Makers?
As you probably know by now that I’ve included a special “BPA-free” section. In it are single serve coffee makers that use little to no plastic. Hence, they do not contain toxic compounds that may spoil all the fun.
BPA is a chemical found in most appliances. It’s what plastic is traditionally made up of. And when it’s heated, it can emit other chemicals and be harmful. But not to a toxic degree. Though, it’s better to not include BPA plastic in your coffee makers.
Studies have advised to limit human exposure to BPA through plastic. As it causes heart problems, diabetes, infertility in men and women, etc.
